What Medicine To Take For Osteoporosis?

I need a second opinion...
I am having osteoporosis as shown by scans and xrays reports. My doctor started me on a medication called fosamax but after taking 2 tablets I had very itchy neck and scratched incessantly...and i read an article that fosamax has bad side effects and a colleague had 2 good tooth fell out after taking for a while. I have now not taking fosamax and have started to take vitamin D and calcium though blood tests show my calcium was high. What do you think i should take?

Hello,

Fosamax is known to cause allergic side effects. Any associated dental problem, swallowing problem or ulcer in stomach are also contraindications. You can try other forms of drugs to check whether you are allergic to it or go for injection shots once in three months or a year or newer drugs like Denosumab or Teriparatide can be opted for. Consult your physician once.

Along with any of the drug you take, you should maintain good exercise, nutrition and avoid smoking and alcohol to further improve your condition.

If you are allergic, try to go for newer drugs after consulting your doctor. Vitamin D and calcium tablets are necessary when calcium level is low. They should not be taken routinely as they can have side effects.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further doubts, happy to help.
