What Might Be Causing Swelling And Severe Pain At The Knuckles After Bending My Index Finger?

Bent my index finger way too far backwards about two weeks ago. First few days my whole hand swelled. X ray shower showed no breaks. Swelling went down after 7-10 days. Now it’s swollen on the index knuckle at the hand and between the index knuckle and middle finger knuckle at the hand, pain is severe.

Hello,

Your X-ray showed no broken bones. You are advised to get clinically examined by an orthopedist, get MRI / CT done to detect any injury or tear to the tissue, tendons or ligaments. Your treatment will depend on the diagnosis made. Till then, keep the affected knuckle under rest, applying ice packs can help reduce swelling and pain.

To help reduce pain, soreness and inflammation, you can take pain relieving medicines (Ibuprofen or Naproxen), one stat when needed after food to avoid gastritis. You can use a splint or bandage to immobilize the finger knuckle to prevent further injury. Physical therapy, medications, or if required, surgery to fix the cause may recommend by your orthopedist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
