He has to want to lose weight and change his lifestyle. To encourage his along this path, you would need not be confront him but to ask if weight loss is something he would consider or ask if he it is important to him to lose weight.
If not, why not? Any problems he has with trying to lose weight etc
If he is obese, his weight would affect his cholesterol and his blood sugar control. It can be difficult to lose weight but if he can try this would help to control these issues. He only has to lose 10% for improvement to be seen.
He can consider visiting a weight loss doctor (bariatrician), nutritionist or joining an online weight loss program for help.
I hope this helps
