Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Should I Do For My Newborn Infant Who Has Been Diagnosed With G6PD Deficiency?
Hi, my newborn infant has been diagnosed with G6PD deficiency. He is combo fed ( breast milk and formula). His formula contains 3.5% soybean oil and soy lecithin. Is it safe to use? Also, as a lactating mother, do I have to avoid all food and medicines that my g6pd baby is supposed to avoid?
The relationship of dietary and herbal food has not been observed very clearly in G6PD deficient. Even if it is present, then it should not be to a worrisome extent. Though, fava bean & legumes have been said to be detrimental to the G6PD deficient patients, but there is no conclusive study to prove this. Therefore, in my opinion, it is irrelevant to corelate the effects of food on the symptoms observed in G6PD deficient patients.
More over, it is all the more irrelevant to relate it to the food taken by lactating mother. However, use of some drugs like ibuprofen or chloroquine may definitely give rise to severe & sometimes even fatal hemolytic episodes in such patients. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to consult your doctor about the use of any new drug in these patients.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
