What Should Be Done For Absent Menstruation After A Medical Abortion?

Hello. I need some advice. I basically don't have insurance. I had a medical abortion on the 20th of Dec. I had my follow up and confirmed that the pills worked and I was no longer pregnant. At the time of the follow up I was in the middle of week 3 on my Pop BC pack and had not yet had my period. They told me to call if I had not got it by the end of the pack (though I think they thought I was on normal BC). I am now going to start week 3 of my 2nd pop bc pill pack since the abortion and have still not had my period yet. Also at follow up they said they couldn't tell how many there were but that I still had clots to pass. Also I just had a mishap tonight where this afternoon I had unprotected sex with my fiancé and then slept way past the normal time that I take my meds. I went ahead a took my pill but it has been over 4 hrs. I am considering going to get plan b but wanted to know if this would be safe under the circumstances as well as what if anything I should do about not having had my period yet since the abortion.

Hello,

Consult a gynecologist and get evaluated. Slight delay can happen after medical abortion. If the bleeding is delayed for long, you can consult a gynecologist and get evaluated. You might require progestins to make your periods re appear.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
