What Should Be The Dosage Of Folic Acid In Early Pregnancy?
I have been taking Folic Acid tablets which contains "Folic Acid BP -5mg", for nearly 5 weeks & I found out now that I'm pregnent. I did not realize this quantity (5mg) was too high until I read answer to previous quastions in this web site. Is this dosage too high? Will this cause any risk for my new baby? Only 5mg tables are sold in Sri Lanka as well... so should I stop taking this 5mg table now? Pls help.. Tks!!
You do not need to worry yourself. Folic acid is a supplement and the body absorbs the quantity it needs.
Recheck if the dosage is not 5 micrograms which is the common form of folic acid? There is no reason to worry as it was a good thing that you were on folic acid before even becoming pregnant. High doses do not really have severe adverse effects unless you have some other conditions which could be masked by the effect of the folic acid. Such conditions include; masking of vitamin b 12 deficiency as well as reducing the effect of some drugs.
In the absence of any of these, there is absolutely no reason to be afraid of and you could continue with your folic acid tablet or go for iron tablets that are combined with folic acid in combined tablets.

In pregnancy, the required dosage for folic acid is 0.5
