Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
i stayed at a hotel last night, and i woke up with about 12 bites all over my left arm and face. Some of the bites (on my back) aren't too bad, but i have 5 on my arm and one on my face that have swollen up to the size of a half dollar and are sending sharp shooting pains up my arm and throughout my forehead. I don't know what to do and they are becoming really painful. What should i do?
Bug bites are common in hotels due to the dust around. If you have got bug bites then it is best not to scratch them. If you scratch the bites then they can develop induration and infection which can make it in to a painful abscess. It is best to apply calamine lotion over the bites to reduce the itching. For the itching you can also take Benadryl syrup orally and this will help reduce inflammation as it is antihistamine.
If the itching cannot be controlled by calamine then you can directly apply a topical cream to ease pain and provide itch relief. Creams containing ingredients such as hydrocortisone, lidocaine or pramoxine may help control pain. Other creams, such as calamine lotion or those containing colloidal oatmeal or baking soda, can help soothe itchy skin.
