Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What To Do For Kid Passing Stools Which Are Large And Dark With Ammonia Odor?
My 3 year old daughter is having bowel movements that are 3 days apart and have a strong ammonia odor. She eats well, drinks well and has lots of fruit in her diet. The stools are large and dark in colour. What could cause the ammonia odor? Stool softener doc prescribed is not helping much.
Noted that your 3-year-old daughter is not passing stool daily, whenever it happens the stools have strong ammonia smell, large and dark in spite of normal diet and habits. I would advise you the following:
Insist the doctor for the following:
Tests of stool for three times. X-ray of abdomen to see for fecoliths, colon size. Contrast enhanced CT scan of abdomen. If needed pediatric colonoscopy and biopsy. All these will give a probable diagnosis; stool softeners are not helping her means there is more to be diagnosed.
Identify the foods and beverages that increase her problems and stop these altogether. Continue stool softeners.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
