What Type Of Drugs Should Be Administered For Hypothyroidism?

Hello..I would like to ask this question which is related to my mummy. She is 48 years old. Recently when she has undergone her regular check up she came to know that her thyroid levels are increased from 5 to 5.8 units. Her physician has prescribed Fortiza Thyrox 12.5mg. If her problem is hyperthyroidism then what is the basis of giving a drug for hypothyroidism condition?

Hi! You are observant! Usually, three hormones are tested to detect thyroid function - T3 & T4, produced by the thyroid and TSH, a controlling hormone, produced by the pituitary, the master gland in the brain. TSH asks the thyroid to produce more T3 and T4. When the thyroid function is low, the TSH secretion is increased to whip the thyroid into action and produce more! So, in hypothyroidism, TSH would be high, but your mother would still need thyroxine. Trust that answers your question.
