When Should A Tonsillectomy And An Adnoidectomy Be Done?
Daughter is 38 yrs. old--has been diagnosed with several thyroid nodules and a needle biopsy was done. She saw the Specialist-ENT? physician 2 days ago and stated that the daughter has to have her tonsils and adenoids out first. she has not any problems with her tonsils as a child or an adult.Physician did not tell her why she needed a tonsillectomy and an adnoidectomy. I am a critical care nurse- would it be that the physician is worried about the insertion of the endotracheal tube for thyroidectomy.Daughter is freaking out and said that she will refuse to have all that. I told her to go for a 2nd opinion and ASK why the physician wants to remove her tonsils.
hi.....welcome to health care magic.....thyroidectomy has nothing to do with tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy...even if they are enlarged there will be no problem during endotracheal tube intubation...it is very less likely that she is having adenoids in this age as adenoids usually regress by puberty...moreover if she is not having frequent sore throat, painful swallowing, earache ,hearing loss or mouth breathing no need to undergo tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy..
