When Will The Scar Tissue Starts To Soften?

Hi there. I am 42 and had my tonsils out almost 3 months ago. Now I have horrible scar tissue- Been to two different ENT s and they all tell me to be patient and that it will go away. The one I saw yesterday said that it can sometimes take up to a year but that it will go away It is mostly on the left side. Actually, if it wasn t for the pain and discomfort on the left side, the rest of my throat feels great I am in so much pain and discomfort that I am barely able to function. Can you tell me when the scar tissue starts to soften? I have also heard that you can go in and surgically remove it- is this true? Please advise. Thank you- Suzie in Denver

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of tonsillectomy at the age of 42 and developed scar with pain on left side, consulted 2 different ENT.
The pain is not due to scar tissue but due to nerve entrapment in the scar tissue.
The scar tissue can respond in a different ways in every patient hence not possible to predict the future. It can resolve by 3 to 9 months or can go into hypertrophy and so on.
Surely the following medicines taken under the prescription and guidance of your Doctors may help you.
Nerve pain killers like Amitriptyline or carbazepine may help.
Oral steroids in tapering doses.
Anti-inflammatory like Serratiopeptidase.
Lycopene with multivitamins, mineral and trace elements hep as anti-oxidant.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
