Hello - your question made my day. I looks like I cannot give you an opinion without the chart he holds in his hands. Treatment with
vitamin E should always be under medical supervision, first rule of thumb.
Secondly, know the rules of taking your supplement. Always take with a meal and if on more than one dose it is absorbed more efficiently from each dose even with same amounts. So, if he now wants 400 (what units, please - mg or IU?). Our guidelines in the US use mg/dl, but supplement dosages usually us IU and then there are conversions to
retinol equivalents. Don't bother, just try to be specific as it means a lot to me. Taking 200 twice a day would be absorbed better than 400 once per day
The dosages of Vitamin E used for differing situations cary widely in amount and in evidence for use. I do not know what your doctor is treating you for and therefore have no idea of the range is appropriate and need to keep units of measurement consistent as it can lead to the wrong conclusions.
Please write back with dosage specificity, diagnosis for which nutrient is prescribed and anything your doctor has told you. Thank you for reaching out to us. Write back with more specifics and perhaps we can be more detailed in an opinion. Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
