Which Valve Is Better If Going For AVR Surgery?

Hi...i am 55 and 3 days from AVR surgery and need maybe one nudge to help me decide on a mechanical or tissue valve. I have spend literally weeks online reading information and watching the surgeries and have talked to numerous valve recipients. I am otherwise healthy with the exception of Myasthenia Gravis and Degenerative Disk disease. I am very thorough with my meds and I would not look at Coumadin as a huge negative....any thoughts you could share with me? thanks michael

hello,I have gone through your question.I can understand your confusion.Basically there are 2 issues 1.Durability and 2.Need for coumadin. Now a days recent tissue valves have good longivity of about 8 to 10 years. In your case though coumadin is acceptable to you,but as you have Myesthenia gravis ,in future you may need many medicines and coumadin has very significant interactions with different medicines.so I would suggest tissue valve for you if affordability is not an issue,
My best wishes
