While Under Treatment For Lupus, Can Stem Cell Treatment Be Done For Stroke?
My young brother Roy, 40 years old is diagnosed with Lupus and treated for about 10 years. As a consequence of taking some drugs in the earlier period he had damaged the kidneys. This has cause few strokes and have severe disabilities using his hand and walking. One of my brothers found out there are some stem cell treatment that can reverse some physical disabilities due to strokes. We are from Sri Lanka and the stem cell treatment will be done in Bangalore, India. Knowing that Roy is treated for Lupus and getting a cocktail of medicine to control his blood pressure, is it advisable to perform stem cell treatment? Neil Devadasan YYYY@YYYY
I read your question carefully and I appreciate your concern about your brother. Unfortunately stem cell therapy is in its early stages and up to now there has been no proven benefit in treating stroke consequences, so to be honest I wouldn't recommend it to any of my patients. As for the fact that he has lupus that wouldn't constitute a problem or contraindication to it, but as I said I wouldn't enter this treatment with high hopes.
I hope things work out for the best.
