Why Are Different Surgeons Advising Different Procedures For A Lump On The Eyelid?

My Father (Age 73 Yrs), has a lump on Upper Eyelid of Size 1.3 CM. Two different oculoplasty Surgeon have two different Opinions. 1. Excision of sebaceous cyst , with Frozen Section, under GA. (One Time Procedure). 2. Excision of sebaceous cyst , with Biopsy, under LA. (Observe the Biopsy Results and than proceed). Opinion of both the Doctors is, clinically, it doesn t appear to be Cancerous, however, Lab Report is Mandatory to rule out any unknown. My Question iare : 1. Why two different Surgeons are advising different procedures ? 2. What are the Advantage/Disadvantage of different Procedures ? 3. What is the Risk/Recovery for Patient in different Case ?

Hi,

It is a growth on the upper eyelid. First, it should be clinically examined. If it is related to eyelash in all respect it should be removed by excision and be subject to biopsy. After getting biopsy report treatment should be started accordingly. Procedure is to be decided by operating surgeon. If it is related to eyelashes then epilation should be done. After surgery recovery can be predicted. According to me observe biopsy result and then proceed is correct. As such no risk is there but can discuss with your operating surgeon about the risk.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

Excision and biopsy are better selections of procedure. It is your own choice, biopsy should be done. The doctors are recommending the procedure as per their experience. Both procedures are equally satisfactory. Risk and recovery for both the procedure are equal. It depends on the efficiency of both doctors and which should be carefully done. There is no risk factor in both procedures. It is up to operating surgeon to decide the option.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
