Why Are Doctors Not Concerned For Lost Appetite Post Bowel Obstruction Surgery?
My friends husband has been in hospital for 3 1/2 weeks. Had surgery for bowel, obstruction. On dialysis for amyldosis. He lost 30 lbs., has no appetite, but doctors are not worried. Will not even talk about G tube or IV nutrition. I am a nurse practitioner and don t understand their thoughts. They say his labs are fine so they are not worried.
Hello, 1) loss of 30 lbs, intestinal surgery, chronic hospitalization, cachexia associated with his comorbid condition indicate supportive parenteral or enteral nutrition 2) It also depend on serum protein, type of surgery, if small intestine was removed then length of remaining small bowel, present symptoms 3) Parenteral nutrition is recommended after bowel surgery if required (based on status of intestinal motility, intestinal anastomosis if done)
