It has to do a lot with diet and exercise, and genetics and health care. Some African-American have fewer access to health-care, so many health conditions get diagnosed too late. You will find different types of blood pressure drugs work better on African-Americans than on Whites. So I doubt it's because we have a chip on our shoulders.
