Why Do I Have Difficulty Urinating After Having Wine?

I have on two occassions had excessive wine consumption (1 + bottles) in about 2-3 hour period. Each time I have difficulty urinating. The most frequent occassion I had to go to emergency for cathiter. The Dr. said, that he didn't think it was the wine. I am 79 years old and have never had any prostate problems. In fact I have no other health problems. Thanks for yoy input .David

Ok, first one can immediately tell if it is a problem with flow or urine production. If the catheter produces a lot of urine output then it is a problem with getting the urine out and if the catheter doesn't give any urine then its a problem with making urine. Problems with making urine if they are very rare, are not very serious (dehydration or loss of fluid in sweating). Problems with getting the urine out, imply a problem that might not be fixable!
Prostate
CHanges in the tone of the bladder and the bladder just lying there or the urethra getting increased tone and not letting the urine out. Tricky to treat, but probably easier to prevent!

Psychiatrist Dr. Suneetha K S's  Response
We understand your concern.

Difficulty in urinating could be because of several reasons like prostate disorder, UTI, urinary tract mass etc.Wine is unlikely to cause such problems. You will need a detailed evaluation. Your doctor might ask you to get ultrasound kub, urine test.If the tests are inconclusive they might ask for CT or MRI, IVP etc.It is better to undergo detailed evaluation to rule out all the possibilities.

Hope the answer has helped you.
