Why Does A Shadow Appear On The Scan Of The Prostrate Gland?
Hello Doctor,
My dad who is 64 has just had a scan on his prostrate and numerous blood tests done. He will get results middle of next week but has been told from scan he has got a 3 inch shadow, what does this mean please as he is so worried. please help, Thank you.
Hi. Thanks for your query about your Dad/ father who is 64 yes old. The 3 inch shadow is too large to appear in a normal patient and can be present due to many reasons as follows: Very large prostate with abscess or a cyst. Cancer of the prostate and surrounding tissues. Diverticulum of bladder. A large stone in the urinay bladder.
I would advise the following: MRI/ CT scan of pelvis and abdomen to confirm. Other tests have already been sent. PSA is an important investigation. Guided biopsy may be needed. Consult an Urologist for further care.
Hello and welcome to HCM. As an Urologist, i fully share your concern. Unless details of the scan are not available,it's difficult for anyone to opine, on just mention of a 3 inch shadow. Let the full blood reports and scan report be available. There's no point in getting worried, without reason. You may send the reports to me, for an expert opinion, as a direct question. Dr.Matthew J. Mangat.
