Why Does It Bleed From The Penis?

My partner noticed this morning when he woke up that he had blood stains in his boxer shorts at the front & throughout today it has appeared. He hasn't seen any blood appear when he has had a wee.

Could you advise us as to what it may be. He currently takes warfarin.

Hi, welcome to HCM. Thanks for asking your query at this forum.
We understand your concern. I have read your question carefully and understood it. I will try my best to answer it.

Apparently your partner may have bleeding due to warfarin use. Let me explain this for you.

Warfarin is an anticoagulant which is prescribed to a keep the blood fluid and to avoid clot formation in a patient like valvular heart disease, atherosclerosis, thrombosis etc. It prolongs the clotting time by inhibiting the synthesis of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors. Due to cumulative effect some times it produces bleeding diathesis. The bleeding due to this drug is slow (ooze like), silent and painless, so often goes un-noticed initially.

But this is certainly a dangerous situation and in your partner's case it may be due to silent bleeding through urethra. Since it may be in the form of oozing it may easily get washed with initial jet of urine and may not colour the urine. This may be potentially a serious condition as there may be associated bleeding from other site also like in gastrointestinal tract which may cause significant loss of blood and further complications.

So, in your partner's case, it may be a wise decision to do a PT and INR test immediately (to know the coagulation profile of blood), to stop the drug temporarily, and to start the drug cautiously later on in lower doses. He may discuss these issues to his doctor urgently.

I hope it answers your query. I wish your partner a better health.
