Why Does My Daughter's Heart Rate Spike Up To 195 During Workouts?

My daughter is a very fit college athlete. During workouts her heart rate goes up to 190-195 and has to keep stopping due to shortness of breath and feels like her throat is closing up. Had a stress test, ultrasound, sleep study, and they dont think asthma. I am stumped and dont know what to do. The cardiologist didnt even seem to take her seriously because of her age and wanted to chalk it up to anxiety.

Hi,

For the age below 20 years average exertion heart rate is up to 200/minute. So don't worry during exertion in young age it is common. If she experiencing any giddiness or fatigue or synchope then you may need to consult your cardiologist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Cardiologist Dr. Ilir Sharka's  Response
Hi,

Regarding your concern, I would explain that it is quite normal to have a higher heart rate during physical activity. As long as her cardiac tests result normal, there is no reason to worry about any cardiac disorders. Anyway, I would recommend checking her thyroid hormone levels for possible thyroid gland dysfunction.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka
