Why Does My Head Get Fuzzy When I Am Not Wearing Custom Night Guard Which Keeps My Bite Aligned Straight ?
Hi, I am a 24 year old female. I have a unilateral posterior crossbite with mandibular shift which has caused my TMJ. It has been giving me trouble for about seven months now. My dentist has made me a custom night guard which keeps my bite aligned straight. But he said this was just a temporary fix and that I needed to get braces to fix my crossbite to get relief of my TMJ pain. I went to a orthodontist and he took a million xrays, and molds of my mouth and said that I needed to get braces for about two years. He said that he thought he could make my headaches and tightness in my neck more manageable, but that there was no cure for my tmj. He also said my TMJ joints are two different sizes. One was size like .12 and the other .16 and shaped different. I am not sure what this all means. But the reason for this post is that I have been wearing my night guard 24/7 - but when I go to class I do not like to wear it because when I talk I sound funny. I can t enunciate certain words...but now it has come to the point where I have headaches when I do not have it in and I can t think clearly for anything. I actually feel kind of dumb with out it. I know this sounds crazy but should I keep wearing it ? Why does my head get fuzzy when I am not wearing it? I do not understand.
hi,
you have being going through a lot of discomfort, well it would be rather easy to answer if i could see your xrays and models...anyways just to let you know...the tmj is a joint which opens and closes your mouth and remains at rest when your teeth occludest...well patients who have mal-aligned teeth..have a disturbed occlusion and thats the reason its causes loading of the joint...continously..and that gives you pain from the muscles of the joint...which radiates to the ear and temporal region and sometimes neck muscles too...so the treatment is getting your occlusion in the right place so that the joint is in normal position at rest and your night guard if made properly helps to give some rest to the joint but is temporary i would advise you to go seek a consultation with an orthodontist and oral maxillofacial surgeon who can help you out ..yes orthodontic treatment (braces) is the answer for you and it takes 11/2-2 years ...i can help if you can email me your xrays and pics of your models in occlusion and individually...
take care
