Hello,
Keep yourself hydrated but avoid drinking large amounts of water right before swimming, it can cause
bloating. Before swimming avoid taking greasy food, you can take toast, light sandwich, or easy-to-digest foods that are low in fat and fiber and give sufficient energy like apples or bananas. It is not recommended to eat a large meal right before swimming. Eating too soon (within 30 minutes) can increase the symptoms you are experiencing.
Avoid prolonged swimming as it can strain abdominal muscles and also lead to cramps.
Shallow breathing or intense exertion during swimming can cause your diaphragm muscles to get strained and hurt your lower abdomen. In case you haven't developed strength and endurance, avoid pushing yourself too hard while swimming.
If you have digestive problems like gas, bloating, or
indigestion, you can experience discomfort in the lower abdomen, sometimes manifesting as sharp,
stabbing pain. Taking antacids or PPIs can help give relief. In case you have underlying medical condition like
urinary tract infection (UTI) or
bladder spasms, you may experience such symptoms. Get clinically examined to be on the safer side. Get treated.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
