Why Have I Experienced Persistent Pain, Swelling, And Popping Sensation In The Right Thumb And Wrist For Over A Year?

Right thumb problem. Over a year ago I was weed eating. No breaks for my poor thumb (thought the thing would turn off if I let go) for over half an hour. When I finally stopped, I noticed the base of my thumb and side of wrist were swollen, maybe numb but i usually associate tingling with numbness and didn t have that. Tried to be gentle for a week and no change, so I went back to regular use. Stretched my hand to grab something and felt a sharp but burning pain between my thumb and index finger, topside of hand. Something like a firework, it burned really bad at first and slowly dissipated over likely 30 seconds. For the first year I had popping often when using hand, and it hurt to do almost anything but especially anything grasping. Open a bottle, turn the shower know, hold a coffee mug, you name it. Pinching too, like writing or trying to button pants. To clarify, it has been a year and a half and base of thumb has stayed somewhat enlarged but also inflates with use and my wrist swells with heavy use. I have use of my hand, but still pain though less and still popping also less. Popping is now only when gripping something heavy or if I have to grasp wider than normal. Sometimes feels like popping something in/ out of place. It is definitely coming from the ulnar side of mcp joint near where I felt that firework pain. No pain outside of thumb area, no numb or tingling. I ve been told nothing on my MRI, but feel like something was missed.

Hello,

Get connected to a detox center that can help you gradually and successfully detox while taking care of you during withdrawal symptoms with medicine and required medical aid. Get clinically examined by an orthopedist and get X-ray, CT, MRI, nerve studies, done to detect fracture or dislocation, tendon, nerve or ligament tear or trauma.

Other medical conditions that can cause similar symptoms are diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, fluid retention, arthritis, etc. Your symptoms are indicative of compression of the median nerve due to swelling that is causing you burning pain. Since treatment is neglected for over one year you are experiencing numbness, weakness, or tingling.

It’s due to trauma, repetitive motion, or an underlying condition like carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome presents with such symptoms. Avoid smoking, cut on salt intake, avoid sedentary lifestyle. In the meantime, keep the affected wrist in rest. Take naproxen, one stat after food to help reduce pain and swelling. Avoiding positions that overextend your wrist. You may need a splint.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
