Why Is Divalproex Advised For An Elderly Person?

My mother is 97 years old and is in the memory care unit of a nursing home. Since I don't get to talk with the doctor, my information of drugs she takes comes from the drug store bill. She has recently be placed on divalproex sprinkles (don't know the mg). I noticed that she had this drug before in early 2016. The price then was 12 per prescription, now its 41.20. First of all what is it used for and secondly, why the huge increase in price.

Divalproex tablet is an anticonvulsant. It works by reducing or preventing the number of seizures by controlling the abnormal activity of nerve impulses in the brain and central nervous system.
It is also used to treat bipolar disorder and migraine headache.
The price of the manufacturers can change for various reasons. If you need a cheaper medication with same composition, you can consult your doctor for prescription of as different manufacturer, which would cost less than the present one.
