Why Is Oxycontin Prescribed For Pain Relief After A Surgery?
why would any elderly, 87, post-op patient, ina nursing home be given oxycontin as a prn pain med. She was operated ongoing on 10 days ago, upper femur break with plate and pins. Is 100 poun ds and does great in PT? I thought this was a no no and feel she is using as a med fpr anto-anxiety in the rehab nursing home (has OCD badly) and as a sleeping pill. I am an RN and told the nurse the other night not to give itb to her at 930 PM but at bedtime tohelp her sleep.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Oxycontin is the best pain killer and its role in post surgical or pre surgical management is dramatic so this medicine being used, the dose of this drug best adjusted by medical and surgical team and it is nothing to worry, the drug is well tolerated by older patients too.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Akhtar Husain
