Why Is My Daughter Losing Hair Since Puberty?

my daughter is 19 and has been losing more hair than one would consider normal, her hair line has receded since she entered puberty and there is a general overall thinning. her father has male pattern baldness and paternal grandmother has high forehead/receding hair line and thin coverage. How can my daughter have a correct diagnosis, I have read there is also the possibility she could have poly cystic ovaries with just this one symptom. What would be your advice.

Hi. Thanks for posting your concern at HCM.

Hair loss in females could be due to
--Androgenetic Alopecia
--Acute Telogen effluvium e.g after an illness or after surgery or any other major stress
--Chronic telogen effluvium: Thyroid disorder, Depleted iron stores etc.

I would advice that you get a few lab tests for her like her thyroid profile, Serum ferritin levels.

If i was her treating doctor i would have asked her to take an oral Iron supplement along with a Biotin supplement for 4-6 months.

A topical minoxidil 2% solution application 1 ml twice daily would help in recovering her resting hair follicles to growth phase again.

take care
regards
