Why My Father Is Not Eating Anything After Two Slight Heart Attacks?

Hi my dad is 94 years old and over the last week he apparently had two slight heart attacks at home. Before this he would sleep most of the day but wake up enough to eat and use the bathroom. He entered the hospital about three days ago and was doing as well as could be expected such as continuing to eat. Starting last night he is only sleeping and not eating...could this be his way of shutting down or what else could it be

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

He is sleeping more means he is getting drowsy and it's a sign of illness in elder. He should be asked if he is having any fever, cough, burning while urination etc. He should undergo sodium levels and hemogram with total leucocyte count to detect any occult infection. He should be encouraged to eat but do not force if he is not willing. So he needs medical attention to detect what's going wrong.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sagar Makode
