Why Some Medications Have To Be Taken One Hour Before Or Two Hours After A Meal?
One of the directions for taking an oral solution by swish and spit one teaspoon says: Take medication on an empty stomach one hour before or two to three hours after a meal . Is the one hour before or two or three after to protect your stomach or is it for the medication to be effective in your mouth? Or..., something else?
Hi! This indication for drug usage is not to protect the stomach but is related with the pharmacological properties of the drug. When the drug can cause damage to your stomach it is recommended to take it soon after a meal (15-20 min after) In this case this direction is related with the ability of the drug to be absorbed better in acidic environment so in an empty stomach.
Hope I make it clear to you. Take care. Dr.Rovena
