Will Antinal Be Recommended For Bad Tummy When Being Allergic To Penicillin?

Hi I'm allergic to penicillin. I'm off to Egypt in 2 weeks and have been told to buy Antinal locally if I get a bad tummy. What's your stance on this? Would I be better asking my GP for something before I go, would it be designed to help tummy bugs abroad? I've been told Imodium will make things much worse

hi,
Imodium is just an anti motility drug and can not impact the infection of the tummy. Antinal is an anti bacterial agent that acts on gut bacteria and can result in containment of infection.
However, alternative drugs like metronidazole, ofloxacin are much safer than antinal and can be used for infection related diarrhea. Imodium can be used if the stool frequency is more than 5 per day or if there is imminent dehydration.
Hope this helped.
