Will Benadryl, Aquaphor And Eucerin Help Subside Redness And Swelling On Skin Due To A Certain Product?
Hi Dr. my husband is having a terrible reaction to the product Just For Men mustache color. He has taken Benadryl and is using aquaphor cream by Eucerin , he says it helps the pain but the redness and swelling is EXTEMELY bad!! What else can he do about this?
He has has developed Allergic Contact Dermatitis to the colouring agent. p-phenylenediamine(PPD) is the most common allergen present in hair colouring products.
Aquaphor contains petrolatum and mineral oil, which are basically moisturising ingredients and won't help much in his case.
If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to take a short course (5-7 days) of an oral steroids. Oral steroids are rapidly acting and immediately bring down the itching, swelling and discomfort.
Topically he could use a moderatly potent steroid lotion, twice daily for a few days.
An OTC antihistamine e.g cetrizine 10mg once daily would help in providing symptomatic relief from itching.
