Thank you for the query.
You haven't mentioned your age and the duration of your hypertension.
Metpure XL (Metoprolol) is a cardioselective beta blocker, commonly used for hypertension, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and some cardiac arrythmias. However, as per the latest guidelines it is not the first line drug for hypertension (provided other comorbidities are ruled out). Calcium channel blockers and ACEI/ARBs may be used as first line agents for hypertension. If blood pressure is not satisfactorily controlled with one agent, another may be added.
However, if your age >60 yrs, BP may be maintained >150/90 (as per the latest JNC viii guidelines), If you areYou physician must have prescribed you Metpure XL, because you may have some other comorbidities. You will have to continue your medications to maintain your BP in the desired range. If required, a second drug may be added. Apart from this you will have to maintain a strict salt restricted dietary regimen.
Hope this helps you out.
