Hello, me and girlfriend are trying for a baby however I ve just been put on citrapram 20g only been on it about 2 weeks. We re just wondering if this could delay or cause any problems to the baby? If you could get back to me that would be great. Thank you,
Citalopram is an orally administered selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used in the treatment of depression, generalised anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and other conditions.
Its most common side effects include nausea, dry mouth, loss of appetite, tiredness, sleep disturbances, sweating, blurred vision, and yawning.
As far as sexual dysfunction is concerned, changes in sexual desire, sexual performance, and sexual satisfaction often occur as manifestations of a psychiatric disorder like depression, they may also be a consequence of pharmacologic treatment using SSRIs like Citalopram. In particular, some evidence suggests that SSRIs can cause such untoward sexual experiences which may cause infertility thus can delay the pregnancy.
So, in view of the above you are advised to consult your treating doctor for an alternate effective but a safer medication to treat depression without affecting the sexual activities and thus enhancing the chances of pregnancy.
Hope these answer your queries.
