Hi,
Protrusion of intervertebral disc can be treated with discectomy surgery only. The symptoms however can always be treated with physical therapy, pain medications and proper maintenance of posture. One of the most important thing is you should not lift heavy weights immediately in postoperative period or after a diagnosis has been made. These activities along with bending forward and sitting for longer durations will certainly aggravate the pain and the condition. You must frequently offload the weight by walking and standing for 5-10 minutes after sitting for period of 20-30 minutes. You can join the gym but weight lifting should be avoided as far as possible in the postoperative period.
