Will Enlarged Kidney Of 26 Week Baby Cause Any Problems?
Hi, My wife is 26 weeks into her pregnancy and the ultrasound today found a 11.6mm enlargement of the baby boy s left kidney. Everything else is fine though and the baby is growing well (about 2 weeks ahead of his weight and length). We are very worried about the kidney though. Is this too abnormal? Can something be done about this now? Would it have any long-term effects on the baby before/after birth? Thanks in advance for your help. Enoch
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Enlarged fetal kidneys can be present in many situations like: 1. Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney disease 2. Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease 3. Various genetic syndromes Since the fetal growth is also ahead of the gestation age, it could be overgrowth syndrome ( Beckwith Weideman Syndrome). No intervention or treatment is available to cure the genetic disease, if present. I would suggest you to consult a fetal medicine specialist so that you can be properly counselled and further management should be done accordingly.Any long term effects on the baby will depend on the genetic condition present. Hope you found the answer helpful. Wishing you good health. Dr Deepti Verma
