Will Fusion Help Me To Regain Some Mobility That I Don T Have?

I am 50 and limited activity and a lot of pain and swelling because of and old ankle injury. I also have a lot of pain from nerve and disc problems in my back from a car accident along with degenerative disc disease. The specialist I saw recommended fusion over replacement and said that I probably had osteonecrosis(sp?) and that the end of my bones are dying from looking at my x-ray. I am very scared and apprehensive about this and have postponed my surgery. Will fusion help me to regain some mobility that I don t have? Could it have a negative influence on my back?
