Will My Hearing Loss Become Permanent After Pushing Earwax In Too Far And Experiencing Pain And Pressure?

I am very ashamed and embarrassed to admit I did this against medical advice and I m aware it was a very dumb decision, but it happened. I used a cotton bud and pushed the wax in too far in. Now I can barely hear from that ear, the pressure build up is painful and spreads down to my jaw. It s 2am Friday and I can t get an appointment until Monday, so that s 3 whole days. Will my hearing loss become permanent if I leave it that long? Should I go to the ER?

Hello,

Go to ER. You may need to consult an ENT. To get rid of pain and discomfort, you can take naproxen, one stat after food. Your ENT will examine it & if the ear wax can be viewed it will be pulled out & you will get relief. If the ear wax is too deep & difficult to be viewed the treating ENT will give you an ear wax removal drop like Otorex ear drop. Apply it 2-3 drops in the affected ear at least thrice daily.

In 3-5 days, the ear wax should dissolve and start flowing out. Clean it with soft cotton cloth gently. Do not use ear buds. Report to your treating doctor, get examined. Ear wash procedure will be done in the OPD if needed. Do not try to do the procedure yourself as you may damage the ear drum & other delicate parts.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
