Will Severe Coital Headache Take A Long Time To Go Away?

I have had a severe coital headache 16 days ago. Pain subsided to a dull foggy ache since then with no sign of it disappearing. I had CT scan and Lumbar puncture which have came back clear. Will this take a long while to disappear. Doctors have now suggested Angiogram.

Hello,

You are suffering from coital headache. Sometimes, it takes a longer time to go away. At times it may go away faster. It is difficult to know why some people suffer from coital (orgasmic) headache. You can take medicines like topiramate or nortriptyline. Take it daily till the headache gets relieved. You can take naproxen (Aleve, 500 mg) 1-2 hours before engaging in sexual activity. It can prevent a coital headache. It works in some but it may not work in all.

Commonly, Frova (frovatriptan) is prescribed to prevent coital headaches. It is quite effective. Get clinically examined by a GP. Not all patients suffer from coital headache every time. But if you experience coital headache each time then your treating doctor may suggest MRI or MRA or spinal tap for further treatment and management. It is caused by the increase in blood pressure that occurs during an orgasm, making the blood vessels dilate.

Increased arousal can also cause the muscles in your head and neck to contract, this can trigger a headache. People who are at risk of this type of headache are men and women with a history of migraine. It can also be triggered by certain type of sexual or physical activity, bowel movement, constipation or injury due to rough sex. Get assessed you may need medications or recommended surgery if needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
