Hi,

I-pill is effective in 98% when taken within 72 hours of the unprotected sexual intercourse, not after the expected date of next period.
I-pill is not a drug which causes abortion, rather it is a drug which prevents the pregnancy from attaching itself the the lining of the womb.
And since she has taken it after missed period there is a possibility that she is pregnant, please do a urine pregnancy test to determine. Doing ultrasound too early in pregnancy may not help.
I-pill contains high dose progesterone which can affect the fetus ,but the affect of hormonal drugs on growing fetus is most after 6-8 weeks of pregnancy .
If at all your wife is pregnant, it is too early for it to be affected. Also I-pill does not affect male fetus, but can only cause some masculinizing changes in female fetus if taken between 6-8 weeks of pregnancy.
So, you could continue the pregnancy, if at all it is confirmed from the HCG tests and repeat ultrasound once HCG level reaches 1000.

Hope this helps.
Regards.

Hallow Dear,

Ipill is a post coital or emergency contraceptive pill which contains higher dosages of Progestational medicine called as Levonorgestrel. Though ideally it should be taken within 24 hours after the intercourse, it prevents the pregnancy in 90% of the cases if taken within 72 hours of the unprotected intercourse.

After Ipill, there is a possibility of some bleeding after few days and secondly, the menses may get delayed by few days to a week.

If she does not get menses even 3 weeks after the unprotected intercourse, then you may perform pregnancy test on the overnight first morning urine sample. Done earlier, it may give false negative results. Else you may opt for Beta hCG test which gives reliable results even few days before missed period.

Ipill being Progestational medicine, does not cause any ill effect on the baby. However, if she turns out to be pregnant and you do not want to continue this pregnancy, you may opt for Medical termination of pregnancy. Up to 9 weeks of pregnancy, it can be successfully and safely terminated by medicines.

I hope this solves your query.
