Will Taking Iron Supplements Interfere With Coumadin?

I am researching iron supplements for myself. It appears that the recommend dose for me (73 year female) is 8 mg. If I take too much, does it stay in the body, I.e kidney or liver? Will it interfere with Coumadin? The least dosage I could find on Internet is 27 mg.

Dear Madam, Hi & Welcome.

The recommended dose for women of childbearing is 18 mg of iron daily, women over 50 need only 8 mg.

It’s easy to get 8 mg of iron daily by eating a diet rich in iron such as spinach, rhubarb, other green leafy vegetables, meat, fruits, etc.

There is no need to take take iron supplements unless you have anemia.

Because its consumption may cause unwanted side effects such as stomach upset, constipation and blood colored stool and if taken in excess amount it may result in overloading which could potentially cause acute iron poisoning or organ damage in certain people who have a tendency to absorb more iron from their intestines.

This condition is referred to as hemochromatosis in which excess of iron tends to be stored in the liver, pancreas, heart, and skin causing cirrhosis, diabetes, heart failure and bronze or gray in color skin respectively over a period of time.

There is no harmful interaction between iron supplements and the anticlotting medication Coumadin

Make sure to follow the instructions on iron supplements, and never take more than your doctor recommends.

Hope these answer your query.
