Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I just found out today that my 27 year old daughter is pregnant and has been on Xanax for about 6 years. She has a strong desire to get off of this med, but she also has panic attacks. She is going to a psychiatrist this Tuesday for the first time. I am concerned now about the health of the baby. Thanks for letting me know there is a cost to this, sorry but this sight is misleading. Not happy.
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Xanax (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine medication, which is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression. This drug has been categoirzed by AU TGA pregnancy category: C and US FDA pregnancy category: D. Hence, this drug should not be used unless there are no safer alternatives, especially needs to be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy. Several studies have suggested an increased risk of congenital malformations associated with its use during the first trimester of pregnancy. Kindly seek medical attention in this regard before use of this drug. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
