Will The Combination Of Levofloxacin And Azithromycin Affect The Foetus?
My wife is pregnant. Currently 13 weeks. She is having heavy cold and cough. My doctor is prescribed her to take a tablet combination of levofloxacin 250 mg and Azithromycin 250 mg. 2 tablets per day. Please advise whether this is a safer medicine & would not affect the feotus?
Hello and welcome to HCM, I am Dr Nilajkumar a consultant gynecologist and I will be helping you in your queries. Your query is relevant. Levofloxacin is pregnancy category C. Human studies are not there but animal studies have shown toxic effects like joint damage in babies. So it must be used only if the benefits are more than harm.
Azithromycin is category B where animal studies have not shown toxicity while human studies are not there. This is the case of almost all drugs as direct human research is not possible. So we use this drug routinely.
Kindly discuss with your doctor if both drugs are needed or levoflox could be substituted with a safer option like Cephalexin or amoxicillin.
Hope this was helpful. Feel free to ask any further queries and I will be happy to help. Thanks for using HCM. Have a good day. Dr Nilajkumar Bagde Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology
