Would Having Chia Seeds Cause Itching Around Eyes And Mouth?
Several months ago I tried making Smoothies with Chia seeds. After a few days, I developed itching around my eyes and mouth with the skin cracking and peeling. So, that was the end of Chia seeds for me. This week I had a vegetable dish that was stirredfried in Flax seed oil. The next morning my face and eyese were swollen, skin tight and peeling. Is this a common problem ? Are these food items related ? Is there a family of seeds or oils I should avoid ? Thank you

Hi and thanks for being part of our virtual clinic!
Although uncommon, an allergic reaction to chia seeds is possible. Symptoms of chia seed allergy may include rashes, hives and watery eyes. Also more severe symptoms associated with food allergies may occur, including trouble breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, and swelling of the tongue.
There is some evidence that cross-reactivity exists between chia seeds and certain foods that are close to chia, such as oregano and thyme which – like chia – belong to the same family of plants. Also sesame and mustard have been shown to cross-react with chia in some individuals.
So now that you know, stop using these allergy causes foods You can consult a doctor and have some allergy tests too!
All the best!
