Would Puncturing The Blister To Alleviate The Pressure And Swelling Relieve Pain In Finger?
My husband smashed his finger in a walmart basket and it is very painful and extremely large from the edema, and a lot of pus has formed around the distal joint of middle finger the nail bed does not seem to be affected however I want to know if puncturing the blister to alleviate the pressure and swelling will also relieve his pain to some degree? The blister is marble sized now.
I can comprehend your concern for the present situation.
It gives the impression from your query that your husband got infection in the finger which is now spreading because of its increase in size.
I do not recommend you to puncture the area as we require sterilized instruments to drain the pus completely. I suggest you to visit your family physician that can perform the same work at the earliest. Additionally an antibiotic coverage is also required to prevent the infection.
Till that time you can do cold compression (not hot one). Keep the hand above heart level which will reduce the pain. Additionally a pain killer tablet can be taken till you meet the doctor.
Hope this information will help you. My best wishes for good health. Dr. Sanjay Kumar Kanodia
