What Can Be Done About Knee Pain Caused By Hematoma After An Injury?
3 months ago I was in a head on collision and my knee hit the dash very hard. Within 30 seconds my knee was so swollen just below the knee that my jeans were constricting. I was able to get out of the car and walk. There was a very large hematoma on the inside below the knee (top of tibia). There was a huge amount of bruising on the inside and an abrasion right on the kneecap itself. The knee joint looked deformed but X-rays said nothing was broken. The focus was on the large hematoma not the knee joint. It has now been 3 months. I am still having knee pain, even at rest. I am walking and working 10 hour days and the knee joint itself is still swollen, and in fact my entire leg has lots of edema. There is pain both on the inside of the knee and the outside along the tibial plateau, and a sharp burning pain in the front just below the kneecap. There is a whole area on the inside of the leg below the knee that is numb but kind of burning and tingly. I have trouble walking downstairs and my knee feels like it moves or pops (on the outside?) when I turn over in bed or move it quickly. It is also still very stiff. I have done physio but she wants a diagnosis. I am currently on a wait list to see a surgeon-- will be at least two more months. Any ideas as to what it might be and if I should continue physio?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Mukesh Chugh's Response
Hi Thanks for your query After going through detailed query, it seems you have Haematoma that is collection of blood inside the joint which can be aspirated out to give space for knee movement. This aspiration is an outdoor procedure (OPD). Regarding difficulty in going downstairs which is suggestive of ligament injury that can be confirmed by MRI of the knee? You may continue with the knee muscle strengthening exercise. Take care and wish you good health Regards Dr.chugh http://bit.ly/drmchugh
