Poliomyelitis

What is Poliomyelitis?

A sequela of infection of anterior horn cells (nerve cells) by polio virus resulting in damage to them, subsequently causing weakness of the muscles supplied by that particular nerve cell axons that were damaged. It is generally one sided, but can be bilateral. Rarely, very severe disease can result in bedridden state and nerves of respiratory muscle involvement can lead to death.
