As you become older the jelly like material called vitreous becomes more liquid. Then the collagen fibers in the vitreous tend to clump together. These bits of tiny debris appear like shadows on the retina.

Treatment:

If the floaters are few and does not cause any problem then there is no need for any treatment

If the floaters are many and if it affects the vision, then vitrectomy is perfomed. In vitrectomy the vitreous gel with floaters are removed and the vitreous is replaced by salt solution.
