The right way to wash hands:

Washing hands is the most common thing that we do daily ever since our childhood. But still, the truth is that most of the people (70%) wash their hands incorrectly. Our hands come in contact with our face and food many times during the day, so it is important that we know to wash our hands in the right way. Washing hands will also reduce the risks of getting sick. The main mistake what we all do is not wash the hands for long enough. It is recommended to wash hands for at least 20 seconds.

Steps to wash hands:

  • Total duration of the procedure: 40-60 seconds.
  • Moisten hands with water. Warm water is better than cold water. Make sure that there is plenty of soap, paper towels and running water.
  • Take enough soap to cover the surface of both hands. Liquid soap is good as it is contained in sanitized jar. If using bar soap, remember to rinse it before and after use.
  • Rub the surface of both hands against each other. Rub the backs of each hand.
  • Put right hand on top of left hand, intertwine fingers and rub together. Change hands and repeat the procedure.
  • Remember to wash nails. To wash using nail brush is good.
  • Intertwine fingers and rub palms of hands together.
  • Hook the fingers and together.
  • Hold left thumb with right hand and rub in rotational manner. Change hands and repeat the procedure.
  • Rub from wrist to mid-upper arm in rotating manner.
  • Move fingers tips in circular motion in the palm of hand.
  • Rinse hands with water.
  • Dry hands with a disposable towel.
  • Close the tap using the disposable towel to avoid undoing the handwash that you have just done.

 When to wash hands:

  •  Before and after handling food items
  • Before and after using the restroom.
  • Before and after touching any patient, and any child.
  • After handling money, railings, being in any public place.
  • After touching eyes, nose, hair, private parts.
