Thank you for the information. I've had colonoscopies previously. The black stool has stopped, and returned to normal, as I'd hoped.

While the information and general advice provided was interesting and possibly useful in the longer term, the main focus of my questions (and I probably didn't express myself very well) was to determine if what I was experiencing 8 days after surgery was unusual. From that perspective I was looking for someone with experience of doing or knowing about that surgery, so I don't think the answers were quite on target. This morning in fact I am better. Nonetheless, I do appreciate the responses I was given.
