Brief Answer:
Yes these are compatible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

Sometimes Vitamin B 12 is necessary when patients have a history of stomach ulcers or gastritis and need to be on proton pump inhibitors like Nexium. Blocking the acid decreases absorption of Vitamin B 12 orally.

B 12 injections are compatible with your medications.

Had gastritis since after thanksgiving. Some days i have stomach pain and other days acid reflux. Been on nexium and put on carafate since yesterday. Does pain come and go in waves? And do people eventually get over gastritis? It was caused from to many Nsaids in a short perriod. A couple of weeks

Brief Answer:
Yes people do recover from gastritis.

Detailed Answer:
I am sorry you are continuing to have stomach symptoms. Usually the pain will happen at particular times such as when the stomach is empty, and sometimes after eating. But usually there is a pattern to it. And you may find that certain foods make it worse.

Yes, people do recover from gastritis, particularly if there was a specific event that brought it on that is now discontinued. It can take several weeks to months for healing, depending on the severity of the injury, but you should find some indication of improvement in a matter of a couple of weeks after starting either an H2 blocker or a proton pump inhibitor (Nexium).

Have been on nexium about 4 weekls and carafate since yesterday. Does pain in stomach come and go in waves while recovering?

Answered by Dr. Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Yes can come in waves.

Detailed Answer:
The pain can come in waves, but should be overall improving. If it is not, and it has been 4 weeks, if you have not seen a gastroenterologist you might want to ask for a referral.

I have factor five leiden. Is it ok to be taking carafate with this blood disorder
doctor

Brief Answer:
Here is information from FDA:

Detailed Answer:
I found the following regarding adverse thrombotic events in people taking sucralfate:

"Between January 2004 and October 2012, 1 individuals taking SUCRALFATE (SURCRALFATE) reported THROMBOSIS to the FDA. A total of 1 SUCRALFATE (SURCRALFATE) drug adverse event reaction reports were made with the FDA during this time period.

Often the FDA only receives reports of the most critical and severe cases; these numbers may therefore underrepresent the complication rate of the medication."

So it doesn't look like there is a significant risk of thrombosis in the general population. However I could not find what the risk would be for someone with thrombophilia. Do you have a doctor (perhaps a hematologist) you see for your Factor V Leiden who can advise about this specifically?

Otherwise, another option is to contact the pharmacy where you get the Carafate filled and put the question to them: ask them if they will look it up when they have time and to call you back at their convenience. Pharmacists have a large data base of drug related research they can search thru, and usually don't mind looking if you get the drug from them, and are not expecting an answer immediately.
